Categories

Categories is a feature that helps users organize products into groups, primarily intended for displaying product organization on the live website. A single product can belong to multiple categories, and the feature supports a hierarchical structure, allowing users to create parent and child categories. Categories can also be easily rearranged by dragging and dropping them into the desired order.

In this article, we will walk you through the category settings and the key functionalities available in the Categories feature.

Permission

To access/manage the Categories feature, users are required to have “Categories” role.


How to create a category

1. Navigate to Categories under Products menu.

2. Click “Add category”.

3. Fill in details of a category. 

Here’re the settings of each category:

1. Category name*
This field supports a single language and is for admin use only.

  1. Category title*
    Category title is intended for use on the live website and also serves as a fallback for metadata.
  1. Category url*
    To set up a page URL.  Category supports a hierarchical URL – the child category’s URL will automatically include the parent category’s URL as a part of its path. For the shops activating LanguageUrls feature, category URL can be set differently in each available language. Read more about How to set up multilingual URL. 
  2. User Identifier
  3. Google product category
    This field is intended for use on product feeds. The information will appear as a value in an attribute <g:google_product_category> in some feed types.
  4. Filters
    To select the taxonomy tags which are used to filter products in category.
    Note: Required permission Filters.
  5. Image(s)
    To select the category image(s) intended for use on live website and in metadata. Category supports multiple images to serve multiple uses and supports sorting functionality. For the category’s meta image, users must initially select what  image to use in Pages feature. There are 2 options:- Category image – to use the 1st category image.
  6. - Manual select – to use an image from a manual selection on this page. Options of images are from the media library.

    1. Layout

    To select the layout that determines how the page will be displayed. The available layouts are from Category pages created in Pages feature.

    Additionally, Defaults feature allows users to set up the default category layout for all newly created categories.

    1. Default sort

    To select a default sorting option that determines the default display order of products. There are 6 options:

    • Recommended: Display products based on a custom order sorted in Categories feature.
    • Recently added: Display products based on a created date from new to old.
    • Most sold: Display products based on sales from high to low.
    • Price low to high: Display products based on selling price from low to high.
    • Price high to low: Display products based on selling price from high to low.
    • Name ascending: Display products based on product titles alphabetically from A to Z.

Description

Category supports short and long description, designed for different usage.

1. Short description
This field is to provide a short version of category description, supporting maximum input of 300 characters. It is intended for using on the live website and serves as a fallback for metadata.

2. Long description
This field is to provide a long version of category description. It is intended for use on the live website.

Metadata

Category has a metadata input field which serves as a fallback for category’s metadata. The primary field for the metadata is in category page in Pages feature.

Here are the matadata settings:

  1. Title
    This field serves as a fallback for title and og:title meta tag.
  1. Description
    This field serves as a fallback for description and og:description meta tag.

Add products to category

There are 2 ways to add products to a category.

  1. Add product(s) to a category on Categories feature
    Users select a category they would like to add product(s) to and click option “Add products”. This way enables users to add multiple products to a category at once.
  1. Assign categories to a product in Product setting
    Users navigate to a product detail page of a desired product and click “Edit” in Product information section. This way enables users to assign multiple categories to a product at once.

Sort products

Sort functionality allows users to arrange the order of products in each category dynamically. The customized order will be used in “Recommended” sorting option.

To sort the produts

1. Click at “Sort products” on the Categories feature to begin.

2. Select the category you would like to arrange the products.

3. All products in a chosen category will appear.

4. Drag and drop the products into your preferred order.
